Vastu Shastra —
The Science Behind It

A practical guide for home buyers from our architects

What is Vastu Shastra?

Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and spatial arrangement. It is not a religious belief system — it is a practical framework developed over thousands of years that connects the orientation of living spaces with natural forces like sunlight, wind and magnetic direction.

The principles draw from three classical texts: the Manasara, Samarangana Sutradhara (11th century CE, attributed to King Bhojadeva) and the Mayamatam.

The 8 Directions and Their Significance

Our reports score each room from 0 to 10 based on its directional placement.

North (N) — Kubera — Wealth

Ideal for living rooms, study rooms and entrance lobbies. North-facing entrances are considered highly auspicious.

North-East (NE) — Ishanya — Knowledge

Best direction for the prayer room, study and entrance. Receives morning sunlight — scientifically the healthiest light of the day.

East (E) — Surya — Health

Ideal for bathrooms, living rooms and entrances. East-facing rooms get direct morning sunlight.

South-East (SE) — Agni — Fire/Energy

The ideal direction for the kitchen. The SE corner receives afternoon sun — natural warmth for cooking areas.

South (S) — Yama — Discipline

Suitable for storage, staircases and guest rooms. South-facing rooms get limited direct sunlight in Indian latitudes.

South-West (SW) — Nairutya — Stability

The ideal direction for the master bedroom. SW placement is considered the most stable and grounding position in the home.

West (W) — Varuna — Water

Suitable for bathrooms, toilets and dining areas. West-facing rooms get afternoon sun and warmth.

North-West (NW) — Vayu — Air/Movement

Good for children's bedrooms, guest rooms and garages. The NW direction is associated with movement and change.

Brahmasthana — The Centre

The Brahmasthana is the central zone of the home — typically 1/9th of the total area. Classical Vastu recommends keeping this area open, unobstructed and free of heavy furniture or walls. In modern apartments, the living room or dining area often falls in this zone — which is considered highly auspicious.
